Love it or hate it, Social Media is a huge part of Irish life these days. With the latest Facebook stats estimating that nearly 1.1 million Irish people use the platform, it makes a compelling argument for Hotels to have a presence on it.

We’ve compiled a Top 30 list which includes the most active Irish Hotels on Facebook. We’re introducing this as a regular feature to Marketing Times and our Linkedin Group – Social Media Marketing for Hotels, so be sure to sign-up if you’d like the weekly update.

The list is by no means final so if you feel we’ve missed you out, please let us know by commenting below.

The list is based on the number of fans the facebook page has and is open to all hotels in the Republic of Ireland.

Congratulations to the Fitzwilton Hotel, Waterford who have topped the bill this time round with an impressive 4,239 fans.

A really useful list! Thank you. Keep an eye on The Europe, as they’re embracing the opportunities presented by Facebook etc.

The clear winner does not seem to be part of a chain or international group. Success seems to be down to a very active Wall and genuine engagement with Fans.

Worth noting that some hotels are set up as ‘People’ rather than Fan pages eg Louis Fitzgerald, Arlington.
Friend numbers are still low but will be interesting to see how this strategy works for them.

    Hi Brendan,
Yes we’re aware that many hotels have personal profiles instead of pages. It’s actually against facebook’s terms of useage to use a personal account for business purposes. For that reason, these profiles could actually be deleted by facebook at any time. So to keep our list as accurate as possible we’re only considering Pages.
Many hotels have noticed this issue and have set up a page to replace their personal profile. While this means they would lose their ‘friends’ list from their personal account, it also means that the new page set up is working within the laws of facebook and is therefore a lot more secure for the future.

    Hi all,

As Sales & Marketing Manager of the Fitzwilton I am delighted to see my page listed as number 1. IN response to above and in agreement with Willam, i do believe a business page is the correct route to start your facebook campaign. Setting up a personal profile for you account could leave you having to start all over again in a month, or year or such – so it is best to get off on the right foot.
I find interacting with the Fans at least once per day and offering rewards for recruitment and their own opinions and experiences expands the fan base whilst also giving great insight to offers people want and expect from hotels today.

    Kind Regards,

    Geoff Dawson

    Hi,
My website http://www.partypot.eu sells packages for hotels, guesthouses and self-catering accommodation all over Ireland, and I have a fanbase of 1,005 and growing! Is there any chance of being included in this list of hoteliers?
    Thanks!

  • 10 Rose // Mar 2, 2010 at 9:42 pm

I’d like to add that I think Geoff has exactly the right idea with the way he’s using his Facebook page.
The problem most hotels seem to have using Facebook as a form of advertising, is that there isn’t a dedicated person to update and monitor the fan page regularly and consistently, whereas Geoff has made a point of paying attention to the site, and offering deals such as hugely discounted rates for those fans who invite friends to the Fitzwilton Page. This increases Fitzwilton Hotel fanbase and popularity, while also putting heads in beds on otherwise quiet nights.
    Very well done.

  • 11 William // Mar 3, 2010 at 9:20 am

    Hi Rose,
Unfortunately our list is only open to hotels or hotel groups.
    Sorry :(

Well done to all the hotels who are ACTIVELY using Facebook to engage and rewards fans. Nice to see some hotels (like the Fitzwilton) really “getting” the medium and not simply pushing special offers.

    Hi William,

Looking forward to the updated list on Monday. Our fan base continues to grow since your survey 750+ at present so with new hotels introduced as mentioned above there will be a notable shakeup I’d say. Hope we can maintain No.2 spot for Dublin. And like you Love Hotels, we have a Love Dublin Promo right now on ours.

William, you’ll need to be counting and checking right up to midnight Sunday, looks like an active bunch :)

Ciara, you’re right, it’s the Active ones that will move forward.

    All the best, Peter

    Hi Peter,

Thanks for your post and kind comment on our strap line. Its one that we are proud of and will work hard to deliver on. Well done on the Love Dublin logo – it looks great. We’ll be updating the Top 30 on Monday next – will keep you updated.

    Regards, Will.

  • 19 William // Mar 5, 2010 at 10:11 am

Hi Conall, thanks for post and well done on the fan count so far. The Top 30 list is based on Facebook pages not groups. Groups are great for organizing on a personal level and for smaller scale interaction around a cause. Pages are better for brands, businesses, bands, movies, or celebrities who want to interact with their fans or customers without having them connected to a personal account, and have a need to exceed Facebook’s 5,000 friend cap. More info here: http://mashable.com/2009/05/27/facebook-page-vs-group/
    Cheers,

    william.
